Adobe Illustrator AI Tools and Features

Possibly out of all of the Creative Cloud apps Adobe Illustrator AI contains some of the most exciting new tools and features although many of them are shared most of the Cloud Apps.

We love the Generative Recolour which powered by Firefly (AI Sensei) lets you recolour artwork with typed prompts.

The best AI tool, in our opinion is the ‘mockup’ feature – we love this too. Creating mockups with a few clicks – seriously what’s not to like.

Whatever your take on AI whether you use it to generate artwork from scratch or use it to edit or rework features there is little arguement that Illustrators AI tools do improve productivity and expand on new creative ideas.

ChatGPT helped write the following three descriptive sections

According to ChatGPT, who supposedly knows these things the Illustrator AI Tools can be broken down into three sections:

Generative AI (Firefly)

  • Generative Recolour – changing colour themes based on text prompts
  • Text to Vector – generating vectors from text prompts
  • Mockup Feature (our fave) – applying vector design to objects (cups, teeshirts etc)

Adobe Sensei Features

  • Auto Trace – converts raster images to vectors fast (in short converts a photo to a drawing)
  • Content Aware Crop – in essence you let AI suggest the crop
  • Global Editing – detects and edits similar objects across multiple artboards
  • Font Recognition – (we like this….a lot!) identifies image fonts and suggests similiar.

AI Enhanced Design Tools

  • Puppet Warp – reshape artwork using pins
  • Freeform Gradients – creating smooth fades of colour
  • Glyph Snapping – precise text and object alignement
  • Enhanced Pattern Creation (this is very cool as well) – AI generates patterns whilst auto aligning

Generative Recolour In Adobe Illustrator

AI and Adobe Illustrator

We like this because it lets Illustrator suggest and then apply themes of different colour to exisiting artwork leaving us twiddling our thumbs drinking coffee.

Although to be fair it will take a lot to choose Recolour over the Coolers Colour Palette Generator, not because one’s better then the other but because Coolers is superb for creating colour schemes for Swatches. Coolers is very cooler (did you see what I did there?) to use.

And at the end of the day old habits die hard.

To generate your own colour palettes Check out Coolers for great colour palettes   and click on ‘Start Generator’ to get going.

Generative Recolour

You can use Generative Recolor in Adobe Illustrator:

Simply  by opening your design and selecting it with a Selection Tool

Go to Edit >Edit Colours >Generative Recolour

These AI enhancements are designed to boost productivity and creativity, allowing designers to focus more on conceptual aspects by automating repetitive tasks.

In short and probably the most popular is the Text to Vector Graphic which lets designers add written prompts to generate scaleable graphics creating simple graphics including icons, images and scenes.

As with other apps Illustrators lets you create Generative Shape fills giving you the ability to shape imagery again based on Text Promptsnerating vector artwork in Adobe Illustrator is a breeze. We used the Generate Vector from the Properties panel to create and design a logo for our recorded Adobe training courses.

Go to Properties Panel >Click on the Generate Vectors button and the following box pops up.

We chose Icon’s from the Tab Selector then typed in a really simple prompt ‘recorded video training’ as it happens.

We then decided to refine it a little bit so we clicked on the ‘Effects Button’ found at the bottom of the Generate Vectors box and chose Flat.

And Illustrator kindly generated a unique recording icon for us. Unfortunately it was not the most brilliant of icons which is why it didn’t make it into this post and we could have spent all morning playing around to get it right. But then this post would never have got written so we decided best to crack on.

Once artwork has been generated in Illustrator it’s really easy, as you’d expect to share it across Creative Cloud by adding to a library, dragging and dropping or simply placing in perhaps InDesign.
