Adobe Photoshop AI Tools and Features

Adobe Photoshop and AI generated image

Adobe Photoshop AI Tools and Features have made some of the most complex editing tasks a breeze over the last couple of years. By adding AI into the mix everyone is able to create, edit and publish artififucai arttwork with a few choice words and a cick on Photoshops contextual tool bar.

It seems Adobe are adding more and more AI features to Creative Cloud on an almost daily basis.

We generated the image on the left in a few seconds using a generative prompt with just a few words along the lines of Victorian cake, blue and birds and voila said descriptive image appeared.

Theres a massive amount of AI choices but we thought we’d mention some of our delegates favourites and the most useful ones in Photoshop.

Why not check out the Adobe InDesign AI Tools and Features post

    Adobe Photoshop AI

    Photoshops Object Selection Tool

One of the older AI tools Photoshop’s Objection Selection Tool first made its way into Photoshop in 2020 giving everyone access to more precision than ever before. Almost by magic the Object Selection tool lets you select parts of an image including humans, animals or scenary. Select the Object selection tool, choose either rectangle or lasso from the Properties panel and the tool should automatically make the selection for you.

Object selection also has an automated feature which detects parts of the image itself. This is an extremely precise selection tool for either shapes or objects speeding up your selection workflow immensely.

Draw an initial selection around the object and start drawing over your selected area.

Look for problems with the selection

To add to a selection hold Shift then drag new areas add to the selection

To remove from a selection hold Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) and drag to subtract from the selection.

    Photoshop Generative Crop

As well as cropping an image Photoshop’s Generative fill lets you resize and subsitute existing content which is great if you need to extend the existing canvas.

There are three options with the expand feature of the Crop Tool Content-Aware feature.

    Generative Fills in Photoshop

    Transparent (default)

Transparent is useful for adding a blank (transparent) area to an image. It’s very useful for adding some text or a fill area to a photograph.

    Generative Expand

Just click and drag to extend the image borders to make an extended background and adjust aspect ratio. Not as dramatic as generative fill Generative Expand is one of the most useful repurposing tools contained in Photoshop. It’s extremely useful for adjusting tilted images, straightening portraiture to fill larger frame areas and create new marketing content including flyers and social media graphics. Once the canvas is extended using Crop the Generative Expand will fill the space with AI generated imagery matching your existing image.

    Generative Fill and Generative Expand

Leveraging Adobe’s Firefly AI model, these features allow users to add or extend image content seamlessly by generating new elements that blend naturally with the existing image.

    Content Aware

Content-Aware Fill fills in the transparent edges left over from images like a panoramic stitch or other image transform. It’s used for removing unwanted objects contained in an image, retouching and filling in missing parts of an image and making sure the appearance is preserved in the surrounding areas.

Photoshop and Sky Replacement (Blue Sky)

Ai Sky Replacement Tool in PhotoshopQuickly and easily change existing boring grey skies for more interesting ones. Photoshop comes pre-loaded with a mass of different skies including blue skies, sunrises and sunsets.

Once activated Sky Replacement auto-detects any existing sky then replaces it with the new one.

It’s really clever and even adapts the light and shade to match. Any of these skies are editable and can be tweaked inside the layers panel.

You can also add your own sky photographs into this tool, make sure to shoot some of the more interesting skies you see while out and about. Not really into taking photographs then simply download some professional ones from one of the online image banks.

Distractions gone using Photoshop’s Remove Tool

Again one of our most popular AI tools in Photoshop is one of the least obvious and super powerful without any drama. Find Distractions let you quickly and effectively remove unwanted objects from images. For example it makes short work of removing objects like cables, wires, branches and people.

    Using the Remove Tool

    Remove Too

Open the image you need to remove objects from. In the video below we want to remove the cables and wires from the right hand side of the image.

Select Photoshop’s Remove Tool from the Healing Brushes Icon on the Tools bar

Once Remove is selected go up to the Options bar and locate the ‘Find Distractions’ feature and then click the downward facing arrow.

Select either Wires and Cables or ‘People’ from the box (obviously we chose Wires and Cables)

Once selected step back and watch the Photoshop Remove Brush work its magic.

    Photoshop Tip!
Make sure that the Generative AI is activated in the options bar for an accurate results. If by any chance Distractions miss any part of the image you can use use the Remove Brush tool to manually edit the image.

    Neural Filters in Photoshop

Pretty much neAdobe Photoshop AI Tools and Featuresural filters could be described as digital cosmetic retouching on steroids. Why? Because they are extremely powerful and easy to use.

These are a collective of filters powered by Adobe’s baby – the AI or Artificial Intelligence and as you might guess are available from the Photoshop Filter Menu. They comprise of a number of different effects /overlays and tools which let you do some extreme editing.

However the real power comes into the fore with images such as portraits and photos with faces. Neural filters can actually change facial expression, change facial emotion such as love /hate just with the drag of a slider although some of these are only available under Beta Filters. If it was only that simple in real life.

Neural Filters are activated by going to Filters >Neural Filters then choose ‘Skin Smoothing’ from the All filters list.
