Adobe Illustrator for Fashion Course

Fashion Design in Adobe Illustrator - post update February 2026

Greta Powell Training decided to add an update to the Adobe Illustrator for Fashion Course because we didn’t mention theAstute Graphics Plugins originally and as an after-thought we think we should have done. If you do a lot of sketching in Illustrator then you should find these super helpful. The orginal post is below the update.

Fashion Design Plug-ins

Released originally around 2013 these plug-ins are extremely useful for working with fashion design in Illustrator and they have recently, as of 2026 been updated to work with the latest version of Adobe.

Astute Graphics Plugins (Industry Standard):

  • Texturino: Applies, manages, and masks seamless fabric textures.
  • MirrorMe: Allows for instant, real-time, symmetrical drawing, essential for creating balanced, technical flats.
  • DynamicSketch: Enhances sketching with a tablet, allowing for more natural, adjustable lines.
  • Reform: Enables precise sculpting and reshaping of existing vector lines

Brief description of the Astute Plugins

Texturino

Texturino lets you add and control seamless textures directly on vector shapes. You can brush on, mask, and scale tiling textures, which makes it much easier to represent fabric surfaces, material finishes, and printed patterns. It is not free — it’s part of the subscription-based Astute Graphics plugin suite. For fashion design, it’s very useful for showing realistic textures and surface detail without manually creating complex patterns or masks.

MirrorMe

MirrorMe creates real-time symmetrical drawing in Illustrator. As you draw on one side of a defined axis, it automatically mirrors the lines on the other side. This is particularly helpful when drawing symmetrical flats, garment panels, sleeves, or motifs. MirrorMe is available for free when you install the Astute Manager, even if you don’t subscribe to the full plugin suite. It’s one of the easiest tools to justify for fashion work because symmetry comes up often in apparel design.

DynamicSketch

DynamicSketch significantly enhances Illustrator’s native drawing tools. It provides more natural, adjustable line creation and editing, which is especially nice when using a tablet or stylus. You can sketch with smoother curves, trim, and join lines more intuitively than with Illustrator’s default pencil. Dynamic is part of the paid plugin suite. For fashion designers who sketch garments directly in Illustrator (rather than just assembling shapes), DynamicSketch can make the process quicker and more natural.

Reform

Reform lets you reshape and sculpt existing vector paths without manually adjusting anchor points. You can push and pull curves to refine silhouettes, tweak seams, or adjust design lines with precision. It’s included in the paid plugin suite and is not available for free. For fashion work, Reform is useful when you want to iterate designs quickly or refine complex curves without wrestling with point editing.

Are these fashion design plugins for Illustrator free?

None of the fully featured tools (Texturino, DynamicSketch, Reform) are free and require a subscription to the Astute Graphics suite. MirrorMe can be used at no cost via the Astute Manager, and people often find that alone helpful. For fashion design in Illustrator, these plugins can improve workflow and quality:

Texturino helps with material and surface look,
MirrorMe aids symmetrical drawing,
DynamicSketch improves sketching finesse,
Reform makes curve editing faster and smoother

These are approximately £150.00 per year for the subscription and you can find out more on the Astute website

Illustrator Training in St.Helens, Liverpool

We deliver this course across the fashion sector but tend to  spend a lot of time working within the education sector. We train the staff delivering the fashion design students.

This week found us delivering the Illustrator Fashion Design Course in St.Helens, Liverpool. We spent a few days working with Vikki, Head of the Fashion Department at Carmel College where we showed her how Illustrator fits in perfectly with fashion design course.

Currently their A level course focuses on sustainability in fashion which was right up our street. They’ve been reusing zips, ruffles, lace etc from unwanted clothes or charity shop buy’s to put their physical designs together.

Great stuff, we’re absolute charity street addicts here at Greta Powell Training

From September 2025 Illustrator Fashion Training is being included into St.Helens A level curriculum in preparation for the students going on to university which is where Greta entered the mix.
