Adobe Illustrator has quietly become one of the most exciting Creative Cloud apps for AI‑powered tools and many of these features are shared across other Adobe apps too. Illustrator’s AI additions aren’t just gimmicks; they genuinely speed up workflows, spark new ideas and take some of the repetitive grind out of everyday design work.
Two of our favourites? Generative Recolour and the Mockup feature. Generative Recolour lets you transform artwork using simple text prompts, while Mockup applies your vector designs to objects like mugs, T‑shirts and packaging with just a few clicks. Both are powered by Adobe Firefly (Sensei), and both are ridiculously useful.
Whatever your feelings about AI, whether you use it to generate artwork from scratch or simply to enhance what you already create, there’s no denying that Illustrator’s AI tools can boost productivity and open up new creative possibilities.

Generative recolour in Illustrator
Generative Recolour is one of the most fun and useful additions. It lets Illustrator suggest and apply new colour themes to existing artwork leaving you free to sip your coffee while it does the heavy lifting.
We still love Coolors for building colour palettes (old habits die hard), but Generative Recolour is brilliant for quick experimentation.
To use it:
- Select your artwork
- Go to Edit → Edit Colours → Generative Recolour
- Type a prompt and let Illustrator do the rest
Text to vector graphics
Probably the most talked‑about AI feature. Type a prompt, choose a style, and Illustrator generates scalable vector graphics icons, scenes, shapes and more.
We used it recently to generate a simple icon for our recorded Adobe training courses. The first attempt wasn’t exactly award‑winning, but that’s half the fun refining prompts, trying styles and seeing what Illustrator comes up with.
To try it:
- Open the Properties panel
- Click Generate Vectors
- Choose a category (Icons, Scenes, etc.)
- Type your prompt
- Optional: refine with Effects
Sharing AI generated artwork
Once you’ve created artwork, you can easily share it across Creative Cloud:
- add it to a Library
- drag and drop into other apps
- place it directly into InDesign or Photoshop

Latest Illustrator AI Tools, Rewrite & Concept to Vector
Adobe has recently added two new AI‑powered features to Illustrator Rewrite and Concept to Vector both designed to speed up idea development and help you move from rough thinking to clean, editable artwork much faster.
These tools sit alongside Text to Vector and Generative Recolour, but they focus more on refining and developing ideas rather than generating artwork from scratch.
Rewrite (AI enhanced prompt refinement)
Rewrite is Illustrator’s new “prompt helper” perfect for those moments when your brain knows what it wants, but your typing fingers don’t.
You type a rough prompt, and Rewrite:
- improves the wording
- clarifies the style
- expands or simplifies your idea
- offers alternative versions
It’s essentially a creative assistant that helps you get better results from Text to Vector without having to wrestle with phrasing.
Great for:
- refining vague ideas
- exploring variations
- speeding up concept development
- getting more accurate vector results
Concept to vector, turn rough ideas into clean artwork
Concept to Vector is the more exciting of the two, especially for designers who sketch, scribble or brainstorm visually.
You can:
- draw a rough shape
- import a loose sketch
- drop in a photo of a doodle
- or start with a basic outline
…and Illustrator will turn it into clean, editable vector artwork based on your prompt and chosen style.
It’s like Sketch to Vector’s more grown‑up sibling — cleaner, more accurate, and better at interpreting messy input.
