    Today’s Course

At Greta Powell tailored Adobe Training is the speciality and today no different. This was Tailored InDesign Training run for the administration team at a large school in Worcestershire who has worked with us before. Although held as an introduction to InDesign Course the team’s main objectives were editing and updating of templates and current working documents.

The majority of the delegates were new to the software so we decided the best approach was to start from the very beginning and let the delegates get a feel for the software. They were used to working in Microsoft Word so they found InDesign quite different at first.

    InDesign CC 2019 Properties Panel

    InDesign CC 2019 Properties Panel

Looking for the Control Bar in InDesign CC 2019? The control bar no longer appears automatically when you install or update Creative Cloud. It now needs to be manually turned on from the Window menu. Why? Because Adobe have introduced the the new InDesign CC 2019 Properties Panel and this opens on the InDesign load. Just like the Control Bar the Properties Panel is also context sensitive and changes according to what is currently selected.

    Split Window in InDesign

    Split Windows in InDesign

Useful but oft ignored is the Split Windows feature in InDesign which gives two views of the same document. For example, one pain in the neck of working in InDesign is when highlighting the text to change the text colour it’s difficult to see the new shade without turning off the highly. That’s because all colours are inverted when selected as can be seen in the screen shot below, the text looks purple in the screenshot but in actual fact it’s green. Most people deselect to view the new colour which can be time consuming if you want to skim through a number of different shades to find the right one. There is an easy solution to this known as Split Window in InDesign.

So how can you preview your text colours without committing a number of selection acrobatics? One of the things shown on the InDesign Training Courses is a neat little feature known as Split Window which is ideal for previewing text colour amongst other things.

    InDesign Training Course Work

    InDesign Training Course Work

One of the things I often get asked about in an initial training email query or voice chat is what would I expect to be able to do or be able to achieve after a days training. It’s a difficult one to answer really as the results are so broad. It’s normally down to you and what you want to achieve in the InDesign Training Course Work?

Anyway I thought it might be helpful if I showed some examples of work from delegates on some of the courses and I’m going to start it off with a newsletter spread designed by a delegate on the InDesign Introduction Course.

InDesign Tutorial – Text Frame Columns

There are a number of ways to create columns in InDesign but in this InDesign tutorial it’s the Text Frame Object that will be covered. In this one box you have the ability to set the amount of columns, balance them evenly and to adjust the width between them.

There is a video at the end of the tutorial for those who prefer a more visual approach otherwise…………………..

    Design Marketing Materials in InDesign

This InDesign Training Course, Worcestershire was tailored for the client who runs a boutique hotel, spa & golf course in Worcestershire. The brief was a straightforward one, the delegate was a complete newcomer to the software who wanted to bring her outsourcing costs down by designing her own marketing materials in-house. One of her pressing needs was designing some marketing materials printed externally in time for Mothers Day which is coming up very shortly. Whilst learning the software she created designs in the form of name badges, leaflets, small brochures and so forth.

Magazine Design Training Course with InDesign

Last week saw a return to an old client – the department of life sciences at the University of Nottingham to deliver a two day training course using InDesign to create and layout magazines. As part of their course the MSc students on the Biological Photograpy and Imagine Course put together a magazine /book containing their work over the past year. This includes interviews, articles and, of course photography – which is where I come in to show them how to work with the InDesign software.

This particular InDesign Course has evolved over the years and today the students learn not only how to use InDesign but also how to build their magazine from scratch incorporating a brand (which they create during the two days), a typographical style and image placement among other things.

Adobe InDesign Training – Using Grids

Adobe InDesign Training -Using Grid Layouts

Why use a grid layout in InDesign? Although many designers like to ‘break the grid’ and work without the best designers will have already put in many, many hours already working within grid rules before opting out. Grids provide the solid structure, the flow of the document layout, they are the skeleton that the flesh of position and balanced are based on. They naturally guide the eye across the spread, draw its attention to a specific piece of content.

    Adobe InDesign Magazine Design

    Adobe InDesign Training Examples

One of the InDesign courses I run on a regular basis in Nottingham is a mix of tailored content with the overall aim of producing an end of year magazine /book. The first part of the InDesign Training focuses on the basics of the software and how the tools, panels and frames work to creative beautiful creative looking publications. Once the structure is in place the course then builds on the design elements, how to use colour, type and layout to produce a working theme.

The overall objective though is for the delegates to produce a magazine /book that encompasses all the elements of their year long university course including their photographs, research and course modules.

It’s not that InDesign is a huge piece of software or even highly complex its how you work with it and what you want from it which is why tailored training is very effective. Once we have identified what you need to do then tailoring the course towards that goal is straightforward. If you are interested in private InDesign tuition please get in touch for an informal chat. Remember the Adobe Courses are run in all cities, towns and counties across the UK.

InDesign Tailored Course for Magazine Design

It’s been a very busy week indeed for InDesign Training especially over the last two days when I ran a tailored course covering InDesign and magazine design. The company, who were based in Lincolnshire have an annual magazine which for some years has been designed by an external design studio. They  were looking to cut this particular budget by bringing the magazine and other design projects in-house.
